Coming up on Sunday, 31 October, 2010
Insight explores the significance of choosing where to send your children to school. International studies repeatedly show New Zealand has one of the best school systems in the world. But every week-day, thousands of families bypass their local school in favour of another where they think their children will get a better education.
What difference does the choice of school really makes for children?
What have researchers discovered about differences between schools? And what does this mean for parents who want the best for their children?
Radio New Zealand's Education Correspondent, John Gerritsen, investigates.

Fibre drop funding for schools
On October 28, 2010 the Ministers of Education and Information and Communications Technology announced the Government’s decision to wholly fund fibre drops (the fibre that connects your school to the fibre in the street) for state and state-integrated schools under the Ultra-fast Broadband and Rural Broadband Initiatives taking place over the next five years.
Previously schools connecting to fibre have been required to contribute to the fibre drop cost (20% for state and 32% for state integrated schools). The change means that no further subsidies will be available to fund fibre drops to schools undertaken in advance of the national fibre rollout programme.
